#1 Men's Hockey Looks To Bounce Back Tonight at Princeton

2/1/2020 12:00:00 PM

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Cornell men's hockey team will look to right the ship after a bitter loss while also trying to extend its lead in the Ivy League standings at 7 p.m. tonight, when it takes on host Princeton at a sold-out Hobey Baker Rink. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ in the U.S. There is also an option for international viewers also available through Stretch Internet. Featuring the call of Jason Weinstein, the game can also be heard on WHCU (870 AM, 97.7 FM) and worldwide through the station's website.

For the Big Red, it's an immediate opportunity at redemption after a startling 5-0 loss less than 24 hours earlier at 18th-ranked Quinnipiac. Keith Petruzzelli made a few big saves to keep the game scoreless in the opening eight minutes for Quinnipiac, then the hosts exploded for three strikes in a stretch of 2 minutes, 36 seconds to take a stranglehold on the game. The Big Red never recovered, ultimately unable to mount any sort of charge in its first multiple-goal deficit of the season.

"Maybe a loss at this time of year is something that will wake up some of those guys in the room and make (the coaching staff) look at adjustments ... to get going to where we need to go," said Mike Schafer '86, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey.

After Quinnipiac tacked on goals in the second and third periods, Cornell ended up suffering its first loss of five or more goals since Dec. 29, 2015. That setback was an 8-0 decision against Ohio State, but Cornell rebounded with a home sweep of Merrimack the next weekend. This go around, the Big Red won't have to wait an entire week to get back into competition — something Schafer says he prefers.

"They know what's missing in there," he said, referring to the players in the locker room. "We're not a very physical hockey team right now. We're not a very hustling hockey team right now. We're not a gritty team right now ... The whole game itself is all about puck battles and winning puck battles."

Friday Night Redux:

•  The Big Red is coming off just its second loss in 20 games this season and its first time being shut out in the regular season in nearly two years, falling to 14-2-4 overall and 9-2-2 in ECAC Hockey with a 5-0 loss at Quinnipiac.
•  The loss, coupled with Clarkson's win over Yale, sends Cornell down to second in the ECAC Hockey standings — though the Big Red has a game in hand on the Golden Knights.
•  Quinnipiac scored three times in a span of 2 minutes, 36 seconds around the middle of the first period to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Keith Petruzzelli took care of the rest, making 22 saves for the shutout while the Bobcats tacked on a couple more goals.
•  Austin McGrath made his season debut in goal, spelling Matthew Galajda after the Bobcats' fifth goal early in the third period. McGrath, an All-Ivy League first-team selection last year, stopped all five shots her saw.
•  The loss was Cornell's first in nine games this season in which it played against a team ranked in the USCHO.com poll for the nation's top 20 teams.
•  Friday's game marked the first time Cornell trailed by more than one goal at any point this season, and the Big Red also became the last team in the country to concede four and five goals in a game.
•  The loss snapped an eight-game unbeaten streak for Cornell and prevented it from posting an undefeated month of January.

Highlights From Friday's Game at Quinnipiac:

Princeton Update:

•  Princeton emerged from its two-week break from exams with a 3-0 loss to Colgate last night. The visiting Raiders got all of its offense in a 10-minute span during the second period, and Andrew Farrier made 25 saves to backstop Colgate's shutout.
•  The loss leaves the Tigers 3-13-4 overall and 1-9-3 in ECAC Hockey, with that lone victory in league play coming in its last game before the exam break. Junior forward Luke Keenan (5-3–8) scored with 0.6 seconds left in overtime to cap a 1-0 victory over St. Lawrence on Jan. 10 at SUNY Canton. Jeremie Forget made 22 saves for the shutout.
•  Sophomore right wing Corey Andonovski (6-10–16) leads the team in overall scoring, goals, and his three power-play goals are tied with senior defenseman Derek Topatigh (3-4–7) for most on the team. Andonovski is typically on the right wing of a line centered by Keenan.
•  Senior forward Jackson Cressey (4-9–13) ranks second in scoring, having eclipsed the 100-point plateau for his career earlier this season.
•  Princeton has scored just seven goals in the first period this season, which is fewest in the nation. Despite that fact and their overall record, the Tigers have been ahead or tied at the end of two periods in most of their games (11 of 20).
•  While junior Ryan Ferland (1-6-2, 3.10, .896) is still the team's primary goaltender with nine starts, sophomore Jeremie Forget (2-5-1, 2.40, .924, SO) has started the Tigers' last five games. Forget was pulled after two periods last night, with Ferland making four saves in the third.
•  Ron Fogarty is in his sixth season as the head coach at Princeton after serving as the head coach at Adrian for seven years.
