ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell women's tennis used two wins in doubles and five singles victories to defeat UConn on Friday, Feb. 21 by a final score of 6-1. It's the Big Red's second win of the season as the young squad continues to show steady improvement.
Friday's win over UConn improves Cornell's record to 2-9 overall while UConn drops to 2-4 on the season. The Big Red will look to carry this momentum throughout the long weekend as the team gears up to face West Virginia and James Madison.
Cornell opened the dual by securing the doubles point, led by performances from the pairings of
Ashley Huang/
Megan Polnet at No. 1 doubles and
Fatima El Ashram and
Maria Adiaconitei at No. 3. Huang and Polnet defeated Cassie Chung and Mireille Moreau, 6-4, while El Ashram and Adiaconitei topped Julieanne Bou and Carolina Cook, 6-3. The Big Red's lone doubles loss came at No. 2, where
Sarah Campbell and
Michelle Deng were defeated by Luciana Rabines and Denise Lai in a close match, 7-6(3).
Other than a default at No. 6 singles, the Big Red swept singles play with wins at each of the top five spots. Adiaconitei continued her strong singles play with a win at No. 1, defeating Moreau in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to move to 5-3 for the season with a 4-0 record while playing at No. 1 and No. 2. El Ashram earned her fourth win of the dual season on Friday, besting Bou in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) to win her debut at No. 2 singles.
Deng earned her third win of the season and her first at No.3 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rabines. Campbell also went to three sets in her match, winning 6-2, 6-7(5), 1-0(9) over Lai. Earning her first win of the dual season was
Khary Pryce, who triumphed over Cassie Chung in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Up Next: Cornell looks to maintain its momentum on Sunday, Feb. 23 when it travels to Morgantown, W.Va. for a 10 a.m. match against the West Virginia Mountaineers. West Virginia owns a 6-0 record to start the season, despite no players appearing in the Oracle/ITA Top 125 rankings.
