ITHACA, N.Y. – Playing for the first time since moving into the Oracle/ITA rankings last week, the #16 Cornell men's tennis team won its fourth-straight match on Sunday, Feb. 23, defeating Tulsa by a final score of 4-2. The #16 ranking is the second highest team rank in program history.
A win on Sunday improves Cornell's overall record to 7-1 on the season as the team heads into a bye week. The team resumes competition with a trek through the Hawkeye State to face Drake, Louisville and Iowa on March 6-8.
Tulsa mounted a 2-1 lead over the Big Red to open the match, taking two of three doubles matches and a match at No. 4 singles. Cornell won the first doubles match of the morning, as
Daniel Soyfer and
Lev Kazakov defeated Stefan Hampe and Jarod Hing, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles. The Hurricanes fought back, earning wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Soyfer picked up the first singles win of the day for Cornell with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Boriss Kamdem at No. 6. A win on Sunday kept Soyfer unbeaten in duals with a 6-0 record, a team-best. After
Evan Bynoe was defeated at No. 4 singles by Connor Di Marco, the Big Red began to take over.
A win at No. 2 singles by
Alafia Ayeni tied the dual up at 2-2, as he bested Hing in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Ayeni now owns a 5- 1 record at No. 2 singles this season. Kazakov gave Cornell its first lead of the day with his win at No. 3 singles, coming back from a set one loss to triumph over Hampe, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Pietro Rimondini closed the match out for the Big Red at No. 5 singles with his 1-6, 6-0, 7-6(5) win over Ezequiel Santalla.
Four singles wins on Sunday improves Cornell's overall singles record to 33-5 in the dual season along with a 14-7 record in doubles matches.
