CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman
Paige daCosta earned All-Ivy honors in the first individual championship race of his collegiate career, placing second in the 200-yard IM on Thursday at the Ivy League Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Harvard's Blodgett Pool in Cambridge, Mass.
Through two days of competition, the Cornell men's swimming and diving team sits in sixth place with 291.5 points. The Big Red holds an 18-point lead over seventh-place Penn (273.5) and trails fifth-place Columbia (297) by just 5.5 points. Harvard currently leads the pack with 489 points.
daCosta notched his second-place finish in the 200-IM in exciting fashion, touching the wall in 1:44.50 and just-barely out-touching Harvard's Michael Zarian (1:44.51) to garner second-team All-Ivy distinction. Just as impressive, daCosta's time breaks his own Cornell school record that he set earlier this season at the Zippy Invitational, surpassing his previous school record time of 1:45.10. His mark also makes the NCAA B Cut.
Ricardo Martinez posted a strong showing for Cornell in the B Final of the 200-IM, finishing 12th with the third-fastest time in Big Red history (1:47.26).
The Big Red had a pair of student-athletes finish in the top-10 of the 50-yard freestyle, highlighted by
Jack Mahoney qualifying for the A Final. Mahoney finished eighth in the event with a time of 20.18, while
Trevor Lake made the B Final and placed 10th in 20.20.
Brett Hébert made his presence known in the 1-meter diving, not only making the A Final, but also posting a point total that qualifies him for NCAA Zones. Hébert placed sixth in the 1-meter with 302.50 points, while
Jameson Crandell recorded 261.55 points in the B Final to finish 12th.
The 200-yard freestyle relay of Mahoney,
Dylan Curtis, Lake, and daCosta finished out the day for the Big Red on a high note, placing fourth with the second-fastest time in the Big Red record books (1:19.51).
The 2020 Ivy League Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will resume tomorrow at 11 a.m. with day three prelims. Finals will follow at 6 p.m. Fans who can't be in attendance can catch all the action on ESPN+.
