CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior
Jared Scherl rallied to win the No. 9 match in four games, clinching the men's squash team's 5-4 victory over Franklin & Marshall in the quarterfinals of the Hoehn Cup on Friday at Harvard's Murr Center.
Cornell (6-10), which is ranked 12th in the country, got three of its five points via three-game sweeps – but the other two proved to be dramatic. Before Scherl's win to wrap up the day, freshman
Veer Chotrani rallied all the way back from a two-game deficit at No. 1 to win in five. That got the Big Red on the board and prevented Franklin & Marshall (18-6) from sweeping the opening rotation.
The Big Red deficit grew to 4-2 after the next three matches. Junior
Illia Presman won in three at No. 6 for Cornell's second point, but a big rally from the Diplomats at No. 7 put Cornell on the brink. The Big Red then swept the final rotation, with Scherl's victory coming after sweeps from sophomores
Charles Culhane (No. 2) and Nicholas Göth Errington (No. 5).
With the win, Cornell has advanced into the semifinals of the Hoehn Cup – which is the College Squash Association's 'B' Division national championship. The 12th-ranked Big Red will take on ninth-ranked Dartmouth at 4 p.m. Saturday at Murr Center.
