ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's squash team hits the road to start its penultimate weekend of the regular season, traveling to Princeton for a 1:30 p.m. Friday match before returning to Belkin International Squash Courts to take on Penn at noon Sunday.
Friday's match against Princeton will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Cornell (5-7, 1-3 Ivy League) remains in 11th in the College Squash Association's national rankings this week after narrowly missing an upset of #9 Dartmouth last Saturday. The Big Red got three-game sweeps early from sophomore
Sivasangari Subramaniam (No. 1) and senior
Madison Miles (No. 4), a four-game win from sophomore
Lily Zelov (No. 2) and a five-game victory from freshman
McKenna Stoltz (No. 6), but the Big Green ultimately hung on for a 5-4 victory at Belkin. Subramaniam imprved to 10-0 on the season, while Zelov and Stoltz are tied for second on the team with seven victories apiece.
Princeton (9-1, 4-1) are up to second in the national rankings after Trinity's loss to Yale on Jan. 22. In fact, the Tigers are the only team to put a change into No. 1 Harvard – pushing the Crimson to a fifth game in the final match of a 5-4 decision on Jan. 12. The Crimson has only yielded four points in its other nine matches combined this season, and it has won a CSA-record 76 consecutive matches coming into this weekend.
As for the Tigers, the strength of the squad comes from its depth. India Stephenson is a perfect 10-0, and Andrea Toth and Emily Rose are both 9-1. Cornell has never defeated Princeton in 27 all-time meetings, with the Tigers winning last year's match, 8-1, in Ithaca. Subramaniam had the Big Red's lone point with a four-game victory from the top spot.
Penn (6-5, 2-3) is ranked seventh after splitting last weekend's home matches at Penn Squash Center. After cruising to a 9-0 sweep of Brown on Saturday, the Quakers went down to the wire with fourth-ranked Yale on Sunday before ultimately succumbing to a 5-4 loss. Amina Abou El Enin is 10-1 from the bottom half of the ladder, while Julia Buchholz ranks second on the team with an 8-3 mark from primarily No. 3. Jessica Davis anchors the top spot with a 5-6 record.
Cornell is 2-28 all-time against the Quakers, but it came very close to a big upset last season in Philadelphia. The Big Red got wins from the bottom four spots in the order – including
Mimi deLisser and
Lucy Martin – but Penn held on for a 5-4 win.
Friday's broadcast of the match at Princeton will feature five different video feeds on ESPN3. The lineup is as follows:
