ITHACA, N.Y. — Sophomore forward
Michael Regush had a goal and an assist during the Cornell men's hockey team's barrage of four goals in the first 17 minutes, 26 seconds of Sunday's 5-3 victory over Colgate at Lynah Rink. With the win, Cornell (17-2-4, 12-2-2 ECAC Hockey) moves back into a tie for first place in the ECAC Hockey standings with six games remaining in the regular season.
Freshmen
Matt Stienburg and
Sebastian Dirven scored 67 seconds apart to give Cornell an early two-goal lead before Colgate (9-13-6, 7-6-3) struck back with Bobby McMann's goal just after a power play had ended. Regush and sophomore forward
Max Andreev both snapped off shot under the crossbar in a span of 28 seconds, and the Big Red was suddenly off to the races with a 4-1 lead before the first intermission.
But unlike Saturday's game between the teams in Hamilton — where the Big Red smothered the Raiders to the tune of conceding just nine shots on goal — Colgate found traction in the final 40 minutes on Sunday, outshooting the Big Red by a 22-15 margin over that stretch. Junior goaltender
Matthew Galajda made 22 saves to earn the victory, with two of the three goals he allowed coming on Colgate power plays.
Junior defenseman
Alex Green scored the final goal for the Big Red, which entered the weekend ranked second in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.
