Women's Tennis Defeats UMass, 4-0, at ECAC Indoor Championship

NEW YORK – The Cornell women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season on Sunday, Feb. 9, defeating University of Massachusetts, 4-0, at the ECAC Indoor Tennis Championship.
 
Playing in its third match of the weekend, the Big Red opened its match against UMass with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Ashley Huang and Sarah Campbell teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Ashley Avery and Jovana Bogocevic, 6-1. Michelle Deng and Fatima El Ashram continued to perform well at No. 3 doubles, picking up their third win of the season as a duo. Deng and El Ashram defeated Jasmin Tripathy and Sarah Mezini by a final tally of 6-1.
 
At singles, Cornell won matches at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Each Big Red win came it straight sets with wins from El Ashram, Deng and Sarah Campbell. It's the first singles wins of the season for both Deng and Campbell.
 
El Ashram was victorious at No. 3 singles, defeating Bogocevic, 6-2, 6-4, to earn her first career win at No. 3. Deng played up at No. 4 for the first time this weekend, defeating Avery with ease, 6-1, 6-0. Campbell made her dual match season debut for the Big Red this weekend, playing at No. 5 singles and besting Tripathy, 6-3, 6-2, to seal the win for Cornell.
 
The Big Red faced off against Harvard and Brown in its earlier matches of the weekend, falling in each. Top-seeded Harvard bested Cornell in round one, 4-1, and Brown defeated the Big Red in its second match, 4-0.
 
Up Next: Because of the Cornell men's tennis team playing host to the ECAC Men's Tennis Indoor Championship next weekend, the women's tennis program will play neutral site matches against Indiana (Feb. 15) and Boston College (Feb. 16) next weekend. Cornell will face Indiana in West Point, N.Y. before hosting Boston College in Binghamton, N.Y.
