CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Cornell men's squash team will look to secure its fourth Hoehn Cup in program history on Sunday, thanks to a 6-3 upset victory over Dartmouth on Saturday at Harvard's Murr Center.
In a semifinal match-up in the Hoehn Cup – the 'B' flight of the College Squash Association's national team championships – the 12th-ranked Big Red won two of three matches in each rotation to topple the top seed of the tournament, ninth-ranked Dartmouth. Cornell will now take on 10th-ranked Columbia in the championship match at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Four of the nine scoring matches against Dartmouth went to the maximum five games, and three of them stretched out to more than an hour. Cornell (7-10) won two of those, marathons which essentially equated to the victory – which avenged a setback of the same score against the Big Green on Feb. 1.
Illia Presman got the Big Red on the board with a sweep at No. 6 while the day's first two five-gamers took shape.
Nikhil Arjunan Iyer outlasted his opponent at No. 3 to keep Cornell ahead after the first rotation.
Charles Culhane won in three at No. 2, then Nicholas Göth Errington won a memorable 71-minute affair to bring the Big Red to the brink of the upset. After coming up short in extra points in the first two games, Göth Errington won in the third, 15-13, to keep the match going. Eleven points was finally enough in the last two games, both of which were won by Göth Errington to complete the comeback.
The last two Cornell points came from sweeps.
Veer Chotrani continued his impressive collegiate debut season with a win at No. 1, and
Alex Dworetzky wrapped up the day's quickest match at No. 8.
