WASHINGTON, D.C.— While the Big Red didn't break the win column in its 3-1 loss to #22 American on Sunday, the Big Red's long goal broke two school records.
The Big Red lined up for a penalty corner at the 10:40 mark in the second quarter where
Kate MacGillis inserted the ball to
Bridget Mahoney— the NCAA assists leader held the ball in place perfectly for a
Caroline Ramsey drag flick to find its way to the back left side of the American goal.
While the goal was not enough to win the contest, it was enough to break two Cornell field hockey program records. Ramsey now holds the record for single-season goals with 15 after passing four players with 14 goals, while Mahoney owns the single-season assist record with 14 to knock off Taylor Standiford's 2015 record of 13.
The Big Red's goal was an equalizer as the Eagles had scored with just over minutes left in the first quarter after an American penalty corner was deflected and found itself right at the stick of Gaby De Kock who tapped it in.
The Eagles connected on another penalty corner, this time by Noor Coenen with 49 seconds left in the half before doing the same for another goal by Coenen a quarter later to pull away from the Big Red.
The Big Red and the Eagles mirrored each other in the shots column with eight each, but the Eagles made the most of their opportunities— recording six shots on goal with nine corners compared the Big Red's six.
Laura Kubit started in net for the first time this season, recording three saves on eight shots faced.
The Big Red host Brown on Saturday, Oct. 23 for senior day. The team will hold a special ceremony after the 11:00 game.
