ITHACA, N.Y. – On the chilliest night of the season thus far, the #24 Cornell men's soccer team earned its third shutout of the season, a decisive 4-0 victory over Brown on Saturday at Berman Field. The win provides the Big Red with its third-straight season of 10 or more victories.
"I thought outside of the first fifteen minutes it was a convincing performance," head coach
John Smith said. "We were dominant tonight. The way the guys showed up and the way they went through warmups I could tell it was going to take something special for a team to come and beat us tonight. We had some great goals and I thought we did enough to score more."
Cornell (10-2-1, 3-1 Ivy) out-shot the Bears 22-8 overall and 11-3 in shots on goal. The Big Red was dominant on the ball, owning 61 percent of the game's possession. Junior goalkeeper
Brady McSwain posted his third career clean sheet making three saves.
Fifth-year midfielder
Tyler Bagley looked to snap a two-game scoreless stretch on Saturday, firing off eight shots with four on goal. Bagley paced the Cornell attack with a pair of goals, increasing his season total to 12. Now with 31 points for the season, Bagley moves into a tie for fifth all-time at Cornell as one of six players to ever record 30 or more points in a season. Bagley is tied with Chris Agoliati and trails Eric Kusseluk (37), Daniel Haber (43) and Victor Huerta (41, 47).
After 17 scoreless minutes of play, the Big Red broke through the Brown back line for the game's first goal in the 18th minute. Fifth-year midfielder
Jonah Kagen sent the ball into the box where it was met by fifth-year midfielder
Harry Fuller, whose shot turned into a pass when senior forward
Emeka Eneli's sliding shot attempt sent the ball into the back of the net. Eneli's seventh goal of the season matches his career-high set in 2018. Fuller's assist gives him 11 points for the season, matching his career-best set in 2019.
A shot on goal by sophomore forward
Matthew Goncalves in the 32nd minute set-up Cornell's second goal of the afternoon when the ball bounced off the Brown goalkeeper's hands and met the boot of sophomore defender
Henry Hylbert. It's Hylbert's fourth goal of the season and his first using his foot (all three prior goals were via header).
Bagley returned to the scoring column in the 38th minute with his third free kick goal of the season, a gorgeous ball that found the upper 90.
Up 3-0 at halftime, the Big Red learned from the mistakes made against Harvard and closed out the win in convincing fashion.
"We learned our lesson there," Smith said. "We probably made the same number of substitutions, but we did it gradually and I thought each and every guy that went in did themselves proud."
Bagley tied the bow around Saturday's win with his second goal of the game in the 49th minute. A foul in the box provided Bagley with a penalty shot chance. Bagley is now 2-for-2 this season on penalty kicks.
