Yale Shuts Down Volleyball, 3-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – Yale walked away from Newman Arena with a sweep of the Cornell volleyball team, as the Bulldogs handed the Big Red a three-set loss, 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-20), on Friday night in Ithaca, N.Y.

Jillienne Bennett performed well in the defeat, posting a match-high nine kills on 17 attempts for a .353 hitting percentage while adding three blocks. Joanna Chang and Casey Justus were also key contributors to the Big Red attack, collecting eight and seven kills, respectively. Perhaps Justus' biggest impact, however, was in the blocking department where she matched a season-high five blocks.

Justus, along with freshman middle blocker Camryn Carlo, were a big reason why the Big Red out-blocked Yale in the match, 11.0 to 4.0. Carlo collected a career-best six blocks (one solo, five assisted), and she and Justus were just two of six Cornell student-athletes with multiple blocks in the match. Bennett and Emma Worthington each notched three while Madison Baptiste and Avery Hanan put down a pair apiece.

The Big Red blocking wasn't enough to slow down the Bulldogs' attack, however, as Yale out-hit Cornell .255 to .117 on the match. Serving was another area that fell in Yale's favor, as the Bulldogs limited themselves to six service errors as compared to Cornell's nine.

In addition to contributing to the Big Red's blocking efforts, M. Baptiste and Worthington each recorded a double-digit number on the stat sheet, with M. Baptiste notching a team-high 12 digs and Worthington tallying a team-high 20 assists.

With the loss, Cornell falls to 6-11 on the season and 2-7 in conference play. The Big Red volleyball team will be back in action tomorrow when it welcomes league-leading Brown to town for a 5 p.m. match at Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y.
