SCHENECTADY, N.Y.— The Cornell women's hockey team won its first ECAC Hockey game of the season when it passed Union, 3-0, Friday night at Messa RInk.
Five Big Red skaters recorded points on the night while
Gillis Frechette,
Izzy Daniel and
Lily Delianedis each tallied two.
The Big Red (2-4-1) peppered the Dutchwomen (2-11-1) with 11 shots in the first period compared to the home team's six as the teams played to a scoreless opening stanza.
At the 16:20 mark of the second period, a scramble in front of the net led to a loose puck being dished out between the circles by
Izzy Daniel and
Gillis Frechette where
Alexa Davis was waiting to snap a shot past Union's Olivia Rinzel (30 saves) who lost her stick in the commotion.
The second period was more closely contested as Union took nine shots on net and played with a skater up on two power plays as the 1-0 Cornell lead carried into the third.
At the 13:50 mark of the final period,
Gillis Frechette fired off a shot from the circle and
Kaitlin Jockims caught the deflection and moved the puck to far side of the net where
Lily Delianedis was there to knock it in for the 2-0 lead.
A few minutes later,
Izzy Daniel scored her first goal of the season when a Union turnover in the Big Red zone lead to a
Lily Delianedis pass to Daniel who made a clean move across the crease for the backhand under the blocker arm of Rinzel.
Lindsay Browning made 20 saves to secure her second shutout of the season (15th of career) and the Big Red recorded 35 shots on the night— an improvement from the 25.8 a contest it carried into the game. At the dot, Union edged Cornell, 26-25, in faceoffs won.
