• Sophomore forward
Kyle Penney and junior forward
Jack Malone scored the other goals for Cornell, both finding the net for the second time in as many games. Freshman goaltender
Joe Howe made 21 saves to earn the victory.
• "It's a good win, and it's great in (terms of) our effort," said
Mike Schafer '86, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey at Cornell. "I'd like to see better and better execution, but it's a good win against a team that … always work(s) so hard. They're well-coached and they're dangerous."
• Senior forward
Kyle Betts was a bigger factor in the game than his one assist would indicate. In addition to setting up Penney's tap-in goal just 3:31 into the game, Betts made the neutral-zone hit to give Cornell possession leading up to Malone's goal in the second, and he was a blistering 16-4 on faceoffs for the night.
• The lone blip on the scoreboard for Cornell was a power-play goal by Union's Brandon Estes early in the third period, marking the third straight game in which Cornell has conceded a goal on the penalty kill. The Big Red came up empty in its only power-play chance of the night.
• Playing in ECAC Hockey's revamped point system for the first time this season, Cornell earned three points with the league victory to move into a tie for third place.
Friday's Highlights:
About Rensselaer:
• The Engineers fell to Colgate on the road last night, 5-2. Ture Linden's goal tied the game at 1 in the second period before the Raiders countered 21 seconds later for their first of three goals in the frame to pull away. Zach Dubinsky scored RPI's final goal with just 1:20 to play in the third.
• With his goal last night, Ture Linden (#19, 4-5–9) has taken over sole lead of team scoring. He is tied for the team goal-scoring lead with Zach Dubinsky (#14, 4-1–5) and Shane Sellar (#26, 4-1–5, plus-5).
• Sellar (via Dartmouth) is one of six transfers from other Division I programs on the Engineers' roster.
• The Engineers had won four of their five last games following a split last weekend, losing 4-3 to St. Lawrence last Friday before defeating Clarkson, 3-1, last Saturday.
• Jakub Lacka (#39, 3-5–8, plus-5), who is second in team scoring, has typically on the opposite wing as Sellar on a line pivoted by sophomore John Beaton (#17, 0-4–4).
• Graduate student Linden Marshall (#1; 5-3-1, 2.20, .906, SO) has reclaimed the starting goaltender's role for the first time since his freshman season after Owen Savory transferred to UMass Lowell.
• After having the 2020-21 season canceled due to the pandemic, Dave Smith returns for his fourth season as the head coach at RPI after 12 seasons with the same role at Canisius.
The Series With Rensselaer:
• Cornell owns a 65-38-11 all-time series lead and is 28-10-8 against RPI since 2000.
• The Big Red swept the Engineers in the 2019-20 season series between the teams, cruising to a 3-0 shutout Jan. 10 at Houston Field House before also scoring the first three goals of what turned out to be a 4-2 victory Feb. 15 at Lynah Rink.
• While RPI lost in its last visit, it left with victories in its two previous games in Ithaca — a 3-2 overtime win on Feb. 22, 2019 and a 2-1 victory on Feb. 3, 2018.
