Mulroy Helps Women’s Basketball Run Away With 66-55 Win Over Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Fresh-off a buzzer beater against UAlbany on Wednesday, Shannon Mulroy picked up right where she left off, scoring a game- and season-high 23 points against Lafayette and helping the Cornell women's basketball team (4-3) run away with a 66-55 victory over the Leopards on Sunday afternoon in Easton, Pa.

Trailing by two, 44-42, heading into the final period of play, Cornell left nothing up for debate in the fourth quarter, outscoring Lafayette, 24-11, to secure the decisive 11-point victory. Mulroy carried the Big Red offense in the fourth quarter and throughout the game, finishing the contest shooting 7-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from deep, and going 6-of-8 from the free throw line to rack up 23 points in a full 40-minutes of play.

Mulroy wasn't the only one shouldering the load, however, as KC Carter and Theresa Grace Mbanefo also scored in double-figures for the Big Red. Getting the starting nod for the first time of her collegiate career, Carter played with poise, scoring a career-high 14 points, shooting 3-of-5 from long range and adding three rebounds, a pair of steals, and an assist. Mbanefo finished the contest with 10 points and 10 rebounds, seven of which were offensive, for her third double-double of the season. She also added a career-high four assists, two blocks, and a steal.

The Big Red's offensive production this season has been balanced, as Sunday's contest marked the fourth time in Cornell's seven games that at least three Big Red players scored in double-figures. Samantha Will and Olivia Snyder both chipped in eight points against the Leopards, with Snyder notching a game-high 12 rebounds and Will dishing out a team- and career-high six assists.

As a team, Cornell made Lafayette pay from behind the arc, as Mulroy (3), Carter (3), and Will (2), all knocked down multiple shots from long range to help the Big Red shoot a season-high .571 from 3-point land. The trio was the guiding force behind Cornell going 8-of-14 from deep, while Lafayette shot just .313 from behind the arc.

Lafayette wasn't safe in the paint either, however, as Cornell outrebounded the Leopards, 35-21, on the contest, including 17-10 on the offensive glass. This allowed the Big Red to score 17 second-chance points in the game, while holding Lafayette to just nine. Cornell also did a great job of getting to the charity stripe, making 16 trips to the line while limiting the Leopards to just three free throw attempts for the entire contest. The Big Red went 10-of-16 from the line, while Lafayette was just 2-of-3.

With the victory, the Big Red improves to 4-3 on the season and is winners of three of its last four contests. The Cornell women's basketball team will look to keep rolling when it returns to Newman Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 1 for a bout with UMass-Lowell at 7 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
