Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Hockey Outlasted by #3 Northeastern

BOSTON— The Cornell women's hockey team hung close by #3 Northeastern, but a late goal in the third followed by another on an empty net sealed the deal to allow the high-powered Huskies to take the first of the two game series, 4-2.

Deanna Fraser had not seen the ice this season until she led her team onto it at Matthews Arena this afternoon. The East Hants, Nova Scotia native did not disappoint in her Big Red goaltending debut, stopping 42 saves of Northeastern's 46 shots on the day.

Lily Delianedis was called to the box for interference with 4:28 left in the first period and brought up the first power play of the day. The Huskies, who are known for its ability to connect on the woman-up advantage, did just that when Chloé Aurard scored off a feed from Skylar Fontaine and Maureen Murphy.

Just a short time later, Gabbie Rud scored her second goal of the season when Kaitlin Jockims moved the puck to Leah MacSween at the left faceoff circle who then found Rud open for a shot from the left side in past the glove arm of Aerin Frankel (18 saves).

Cornell would see its lone lead of the day nine minutes into the second period when an Izzy Daniel pass to Gillis Frechette was broken up by a Huskies defender but still found itself on Frechette's tape. The local product out of Westham, Mass. found Delianedis at the left post of the Northeastern goal where she was at the right place at the right time and tipped in her fifth of the season.

The Huskies answered back 16:31 into the second period when a puck out to the blue line was re-directed to Megan Carter who fired a shot towards the net where Skylar Irving redirected past Fraser to tie the game going into the final period.

Both teams played to a tight third period before the go-ahead goal came from Skylar Fontaine 13:04 into the third. Alina Mueller won a face off to Aurard who then moved the puck to Fontaine who put the puck on net where it found its way through.

With just under two minutes left in the game, Cornell pulled Fraser to get the extra skater and Northeastern added an empty-netter with seconds left.

The Big Red were 0-1 on power play conversions and the Huskies went 1-3. Cornell managed just 20 shots to Northeastern's 46 and the win comes as the Huskies' first over the Big Red since Jan. 19, 2002.

The team looks to bounce back tomorrow for game two at 2 p.m. in Matthews Arena.
