EUGENE, Ore. -- Rudy Winkler '17 dominated the field at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials on Sunday evening at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon, setting an American, meet and facility record and posting the top six throws of the night to qualify for his second straight Olympic team.
The five-time All-American, 2017 NCAA indoors champion and 2016 Olympic Trials champion repeated to earn his spot in Tokyo where he will be a name to watch - his best throw of the night (82.71m) is the second-best throw in the world this year. Five of his six throws surpassed 80m and all six throws would have won the meet. His best toss was nearly 11 feet further than Daniel Haugh. Alex Young was the third Olympic qualifier in the event.
Winkler qualified for the final three throws of the finals with his first heave of 80.75m (264-11), an Olympic Trials record and personal best. If that wasn't enough, he set an American record with his second throw at 82.71m (271-4). The worst of his three first round throws was still nearly 13 feet further than the second best qualifier's top mark and he was the only thrower to surpass 80m after three rounds.
In the final three attempts, he hit marks of 82.10, 79.61 and 80.28 and electrified the crowd that was hoping to see another American record or world best throw.
Winkler is the fifth Cornellian to qualify for the Olympic games in Tokyo, joining wrestler
Kyle Dake '13, triathlete Taylor Knibb '20 and rowers Michael Grady '19 and Tracy Eisser '12.
