Ithaca, N.Y.— The Cornell field hockey team passed Wagner 2-0 during its home opener win Friday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field.
Playing Wagner to a scoreless first half, the Big Red would outshoot the Seahawks 5-2 before heading into the break hungry for the first goal at Marsha Dodson Field since Oct. 26, 2019.
That opportunity came in the 42nd minute of play when Caroline Ramsey dished a pass to Natalie Stone who sent a high-flying shot to the back of the Seahawk goal. Just over two minutes later, Ramsey scored on a penalty corner feed from Natalie Stone and Bridget Mahoney that would ultimately seal the deal on the Big Red's first game back in 671 days.
"We started a little bit rusty from going 18 months without playing a competitive game, but I thought we dominated on our chances," said third-year head coach Andy Smith. Â
And chances they had.
The Big Red totaled 16 shots with nine on goal compared to Wagner's five with one on-target attempt. The Big Red capitalized on Wagner's timely turnovers as the Seahawks faced a green card and two yellows to give the Big Red the one-up advantage on several occasions.
Ramsey's four shots on goal led the team, while Isabella Palde had two and Natalie Stone and Meadow Maguire each recorded another.
In net, Aerin Park recorded one save in her shutout-victory start for the Big Red.
"I think it was a great team effort," said Smith. "A lot of people contributed and we'll be ready to roll again on Sunday."
The Big Red play their second home contest of the team's season-opening weekend when Colgate comes to Marsha Dodson Field Sunday at 2 p.m.
