Sprint Football Hosts Caldwell Friday

ITHACA, N.Y.— The Cornell sprint football team plays its first home game of the year Friday when Caldwell comes to East Hill.

  • Cornell looks to bounce back after a tough 48-3 loss at Mansfield to open the 2021 sprint football season.
  • Nate Roy and Calvin Hosler teamed up for a sack while Matt Peck totaled eighth tackles (7 solo) against Mansfield (9/18).
  • Freshman Evan Nicholas played all over the field in the Big Red's season opener, leading Cornell in both reception yards (45) and rushing yards (54).
  • Spending time under center, Nicholas threw three interceptions, was sacked twice and collected 11 passing yards. He was also responsible for the kick that gave Cornell its lone points of the night. 
  • Xavier Martinez, the Big Red's starting quarterback, threw for 106 yards with 11 completions on 28 attempts against Mansfield.

  • Caldwell University announced the addition of sprint football as a varsity sport on Feb. 3, 2016. The team played its first game at home on Sept. 16, 2017 when it lost to Penn, 69-6.
  • Caldwell's defense forced five turnovers during its 35-32 season-opening win over St. Thomas Aquinas (9/25).
  • Junior quarterback Frank DeMaio leads the Cougars in rushing yards (84) and passing yards (99).
  • Sophomore tight end Connor Underwood leads the team in receiving yards (27)
