Selena Georgieva rallied for a key five-game victory Saturday at Dartmouth, and
Sivasangari Subramaniam continued her impressive undefeated start to the season through an elite opponent on Sunday at Harvard in the Cornell women's squash team's weekend split of Ivy League matches.
Eighth-ranked Cornell (3-5, 1-3 Ivy League) defeated 11th-ranked Dartmouth (3-6, 0-5) by a 6-3 margin in Hanover, N.H. before heading down to Boston for a noteworthy match against top-ranked Harvard (8-0, 6-0).
While the Big Red suffered a 7-2 loss to the Crimson, Subramaniam staved off Hana Moataz in five games at the #1 position to hand the Harvard senior the first dual-match loss of her collegiate career in what could prove to be a preview of a late-round matchup at the College Squash Association's Individual Championships in March.
The result also avenged Subramaniam's three-game loss to Moataz in the semifinals of that same event in 2020, and it gave Cornell a point against Harvard (which has now won a CSA-record 91 consecutive matches dating back to the 2014-15 season) for the first time since Olivia Wherry '16 won a five-game match at the eighth position on Feb. 1, 2014. Georgieva would later win her match at the third positon when her opponent was forced to retire due to injury, giving the Big Red two points against the Crimson for just the second time in 28 all-time meetings between the programs (Dec. 4, 1999 was the other – also a 7-2 final).
Georgieva had to work a little harder to win her match against Dartmouth, rallying from two games down to win in five for Cornell's clinching fifth point of the day. Subramaniam's three-game sweep at #1 started the scoring, then
Alexis Shatzman ran away with the fifth game of her match at #6 to keep the Big Red in control.
Ania LaDow (#8) and
Wen Li Lai (#2) each swept in three, then
Lily Zelov (#5) provided the final point after Georgieva's clincher.
The Big Red wraps up Ivy League play next weekend, taking on Princeton on Friday before tangling with Penn on Sunday.
