ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's tennis team competes at Reis Tennis Center again on Sunday, when it hosts a doubleheader of dual matches against Penn State at 1 p.m. and St. Bonaventure at 4:30 p.m.
Cornell (2-0) had a successful start to the dual season, cruising in a pair of matches against Fordham and Drake last weekend. Against the Rams, five of the Big Red's six singles entrants were competing in their first respective collegiate dual matches and all of them won in straight sets.
While the doubles teams remained the same the next day against Drake, a mostly different singles lineup produced similar results – six victories. All told, it was a 7-0 win over Fordham and 6-1 triumph over Drake.
The Big Red continues to receive votes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Top 25 Coaches Poll, and senior
Alafia Ayeni maintains a national ranking of 18th in singles.
Penn State (0-1) started dual play on Jan. 16 with a 5-2 road loss to Old Dominion. Malik Bhatnagar defeated a ranked opponent from the #2 position, and Loren Byers' singles victory at #6 provided the other.
The Big Red is 28-13 all-time against the Nittany Lions, with Penn State winning the last meeting between the programs, 4-1, on March 24, 2019. Three of the five clashes prior were decided by scores of 4-3.
Sunday concludes with a rare match against St. Bonaventure (0-2), which fell to Loyola (Md.) and Navy last weekend. Cornell has won all 13 contests between the programs, though this will be the first match since 2010.
