#8 Men's Hockey Plays Rival Harvard To 2-2 Deadlock

ITHACA, N.Y. — Forwards Brenden Locke and Matt Stienburg scored goals and freshman goaltender Ian Shane made a career-high 34 saves in the Cornell men's hockey team's 2-2 tie with Harvard on Saturday night at Lynah Rink. The Crimson went on to win a six-round shootout to secure the extra point in the ECAC Hockey standings.

The shootout was twice as long, but otherwise it was a strikingly similar result as 24 hours earlier for Cornell. On Friday, the equalizing goal occurred later before a similarly frivolous three-on-three overtime session and shootout loss against Dartmouth. So while the Big Red has now lost just once in its last seven games (4-1-2), the squad has also secured just four of the available 12 ECAC Hockey points over its now-concluded four-game home stand.

Cornell (13-4-3, 8-2-3 ECAC Hockey) seemed to channel the disappointment of Friday's result into a strong start against rival Harvard (10-7-2, 8-5-2), scoring just 83 seconds into the game. Working on what turned out to be its only power play of the game, the Big Red capitalized when junior forward Ben Berard's sharp-angle shot from the left circle created a rebound that squirted out to the bottom of the right circle. From there, Locke converted a similar sharp-angle shot past the left leg of Harvard goaltender Mitchell Gibson to give Cornell a 1-0 lead.

Harvard countered by taking territorial control of the game up until its two goals 3:03 apart early in the second period. Marshall Rifai tied the game on a power-play rocket from the right point, then Matthew Coronato converted his own rebound after Shane made a pair of quality saves to give the visitors the lead.

Cornell recovered and eventually knotted the score on Stienburg's ninth goal of the season, which is tied for most on the team with Berard.

The Big Red has a quick turnaround for its next game, when it travels to Brown for a makeup game at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
