Quakers Pull Away Late, Hand Men's Basketball 79-65 Setback

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Penn pulled away late, outscoring Cornell 23-9 over the game's final nine minutes to give the Quakers a 79-65 victory on Friday evening at the Palestra. Cornell fell to 9-4 (1-1Ivy), while Penn remained unbeaten in Ivy play at 2-0 (5-10 overall).

Guy Ragland Jr. had 12 points and Chris Manon added nine points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists in the loss. Three other players had eight points apiece, with Keller Boothby adding five rebounds and Dean Noll grabbing three rebounds with three steals and two assists. The Big Red connected on 12 3-pointers, but shot just 34 percent from the floor overall.

Clark Slajchert scored a game-high 19 points to lead four double figure scorers for Penn. Jordan Dingle added 17 points, Dustin Moshkovitz had 13 with eight rebounds and five assists and Lucas Monroe scored 10 points with nine boards. The Quakers shot 51 percent from the floor overall and held a 43-36 edge on the backboards. Penn attempted 23 free throws (making 15) to Cornell's six attempts.

Cornell took a 56-55 lead when Keller Boothby drained a 3-pointer on a great feed from Greg Dolan with 9:33 to play, but it was all Quakers from there. An 8-0 Penn run capped by three free throws by Slajchert put the home team in the lead for good, and the Quaker defense didn't surrender a field goal for nearly five minutes. Cornell never got back within five, and a 9-2 run over the final minute as the Big Red launched some desperation shots let Penn widen the gap.

FIRST HALF

• A back-and-forth first four minutes saw Penn get out to quick three-point leads on two occasions, but the Big Red answered each time, the second as part of a 12-2 Big Red run to go up 17-10.
• The Big Red defense forced the Quakers to miss 8-of-9 shots during the stretch.
• Penn tied it up at 22-22, then eventually went ahead 26-24 on a layup by Williams with six minutes to play before halftime.
• A tough three-point play by Evan Williams put the visitors up 31-28, and Nazir Williams later regained the lead for the Big Red (34-33).
• A 5-0 spurt over the final minute allowed Penn to head into the locker room with a 38-36 edge.
• Cornell struggled from the floor overall at 35 percent, but made 7-of-15 from beyond the arc with six different players hitting treys.
Sean Hansen scored a team-high six points in the half, including a pair of made 3-pointers, while Jordan Dingle posted 14 points for the Quakers.
• Penn shot 48 percent from the floor and held a 22-19 edge on the glass.

SECOND HALF

• Most of the second half was played within a possession with three ties, but Cornell's last lead came midway through the half when Boothby connected on a trey.
• Lucas Monroe scored the go-ahead basket with eight minutes to play, the start of a 7-0 run that Penn never looked back from.
• It was a five-point game with three minutes left after Guy Ragland Jr.'s second 3-pointer of the night, but that was as close as the Big Red would get.
• Slajchert had 11 points for Penn after halftime as the home team shot 54 percent from the field..
