Field Hockey Moves To 2-0 In The Ivy With 3-1 Win Over Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Cornell field hockey team (5-3, 2-0 Ivy) defeated Columbia (2-6, 0-2 Ivy) on Saturday, October 1 at the Columbia Field Hockey Stadium. The Big Red effort was led by many firsts, including first goals of the season from seniors Julia Darmo and Isabella Palde, and sophomore Hanke Govaert. Senior goalkeeper Aerin Park had four saves in the contest.

"Very happy with the way we played," said head coach Andy Smith. "I thought we dominated the entire game but it's unfortunate that we let a goal in at the end, but I am very excited for what is to come for the rest of the season. Special shout out to Hanke Govaert on her first collegiate goal today and our DPC who continues to excel."

The Big Red came ready to play on both ends of the ball today. Just over two minutes into the first quarter, Park notched back a save off a Columbia penalty corner. The Big Red answered with a goal by Darmo at 5:27. Her first goal of the season came after a Cornell penalty corner. The initial shot by senior defender Caroline Ramsey was deflected by the Columbia goalkeeper, where Darmo corralled the ball and buried it into the back of the net.

A quiet second quarter was filled with stoppages from a combined 14 fouls from the Lions and Big Red.

Cornell found the score sheet again in the third quarter at 40:44 when a defensive free ball for Columbia was intercepted by Sarah Rogalski, who sent the ball up to Palde. Palde spun on her defender and took a back handed shot from the top of the arc which sailed top shelf into the goal.

The fourth quarter had even more action when Govaert found the net with less that seven minutes remaining. Similar to Darmo, Govaert grabbed a loose ball off a Ramsey penalty corner shot and slotted the ball through traffic into the back of the net. Govaert's goal was not only her first of the season, but the first of her collegiate career. Columbia scored late against Cornell goalkeeper Jane McNally, who joined the game with less than 90 seconds remaining, but the effort was too late, earning the Big Red its second Ivy League win.
