Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Colgate Snaps No. 16 Men’s Soccer’s Six-Game Win Streak

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Aidan Davock's 77th-minute goal and a three-save clean sheet by Andrew Cooke aided Colgate to a 1-0 upset victory over the No. 16-ranked Cornell men's soccer team at Beyer-Small '76 Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Cornell's improved ranking from No. 22 to No. 16 was announced minutes before kickoff by the United Soccer Coaches.

Colgate's victory snapped Cornell's seven-game win streak and 12-game unbeaten streak to the Raiders.

"It was one of those games, where on the balance of play, I don't think we did enough to win, but didn't deserve to lose," said John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer. "Credit to Colgate for putting away the goal. We will use this defeat as a springboard for the rest of the season."

Bobby Foose and Antonio Ducrot were credited with assists on Davock's goal for Colgate (6-3-3), who won its second match against a ranked opponent this season. The Raiders defeated then-No. 16 Providence, 3-2, in its season-opening match on Aug. 25.

Senior midfielder Noel Ortega, junior forward Danny Lokko, and fifth-year defender Nick Allen recorded the three shots on goal for the Big Red (9-2-0).

Both teams recorded two shot attempts apiece in the opening 45 minutes. Ortega and Lokko logged both of Cornell's shot attempts in the opening half, while one of Colgate's two shots were on target.

It took both teams 31 minutes to register a shot on goal in the second half, as the Big Red and Raiders combined to miss the first eight shot attempts.

The ninth shot attempt of the half was registered by Colgate, allowing the Raiders to get on the scoreboard first. Colgate forced a Cornell turnover in the Big Red's attacking third, leading to Davock's 77th-minute goal. Davock used foot moves to get an open shot, blistering the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Cornell had four shot attempts after Davock's go-ahead goal, but the lone attempt on goal came from Allen in the 86th minute.

Drought Earns Honor

Senior defender Connor Drought was named to the College Soccer News Men's National Team of the Week for his efforts last week in the Big Red's upset victory over then-No. 7 Syracuse and in its victory over Brown.

Drought was one of four defenders named to the team, joined by Missouri State's Lewis Green, Wisconsin's Maxwell Keenan, and SMU's Mads Westergren.

Game Notes

• Tuesday was the 74th all-time meeting between the two Central New York programs. Cornell is now 48-21-5 all-time over the Raiders. Despite having its 12-game unbeaten streak snapped, Cornell has outscored Colgate in the last 13 matches by 15 goals, 23-8.

• Cornell had its eight-game road win streak snapped on Tuesday. It is the first road loss for the Big Red in nearly a year (Oct. 30, 2021, against Princeton).

• Colgate is the first Cornell opponent to log a clean sheet against the Big Red since Yale on Oct. 16, 2021.

• Cornell conceded the first goal of the game for just the second time this year and the first since Sept. 13 at home against Vermont.

Looking Ahead

• Cornell returns to Berman Field on Saturday, seeking for its first 3-0 start in Ivy League play since 2012, when the Big Red squares off against Penn. First touch between the Big Red and Quakers is slated for 4 p.m. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN+.
