CAMBRIDGE, MASS -- The Cornell field hockey team fell to #15 Harvard, 2-1, in Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red fought to force overtime, but the Harvard Crimson left with the win. Senior
Claire Wolfe tallied the Cornell goal.
"It's a tough loss, but it's the right decision at the end with the stroke. Harvard are a good team and I hope that win today propels them into the NCAA tournament at the end of the season," said head coach
Andy Smith. "We had our chances but didn't capitalize. We can't ask for any more in terms of effort and work rate. We'll take a couple of days off and then get after it this week as we prepare for Yale next weekend."
The first quarter was a defensive battle with both teams combining for just three shots. The Crimson found some momentum in the second quarter, being awarded nine corners and tallying 12 shots while holding the Big Red to no looks at goal. Harvard finished a penalty corner near the half way point of the quarter to take a 1-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Cornell out-shot the Crimson 4-1. With less than four minutes remaining in the quarter, senior
Caroline Ramsey started a free possession from the 25-yard line that she slotted into the arc to
Claire Wolfe. Wolfe's dribbling on the end line drew out the Harvard goalkeeper, who Wolfe out-maneuvered the keeper to slot the ball behind and get the Big Red on the board.
Cornell held strong through the fourth quarter to force its first overtime game of the season, but Harvard was awarded a penalty stroke after seven minutes of play on OT, that the Crimson capitalized on to win 2-1.
