Sprint Football Visits Defending CSFL Champ Navy On Friday

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sprint football team will look to end Navy's 11-game win streak when it heads to Annapolis, Md. on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. 

The Big Red is coming off a 42-14 loss to Mansfield to fall to 0-2 on the season. Quarterback Xavier Martinez threw touchdown passes for Evan Nicholas and Luke Verzella in the loss as the Big Red posted 249 yard of offense. Colton Kotecki, in his first sprint football game, registered 254 all-purpose yards. Will Anderson had 13 stops and Billy Turner recorded 11 tackles to pace the defense.

Navy, the 38-time sprint football champion, sports an incredible 390-75-9 all-time record (.832), including 130-15 since 2001 (.897). The Mids have been even better att home, winning at a .905 clip over the past two decades (57-6).

Navy is 3-0 thanks in large part to its rushing attack. Alex Totta is averaging 153.3 yards on the ground per game with four touchdowns for an offense averaging 231.3 rushing yards per game. The team is possessing the ball for 33:33 per game  and has a +5 turnover margin in its three victories.

Navy leads the all-time series 60-13-2, including winning 13 straight. The Big Red's most recent victory over the Midshipmen came in 2006, a 16-10 overtime victory at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red last earned a win in Annapolis in 1989, a 10-9 Cornell victory. The two original members of sprint football first played in 1946, a 15-0 win by the Mids. In fact, Navy won each of the first 14 contests between the programs.
