Special Teams Aid Clarkson to Victory Over Men’s Hockey

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Ayrton Martino had his two goals bookended by a pair of Clarkson power-play goals, leading the host Golden Knights to a 4-1 victory over the Cornell men's hockey team in a spirited and physical ECAC Hockey game at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

Zach Tupker scored the lone goal for the Big Red (2-4-0, 2-2-0 ECAC) and Remington Keopple stopped all six shots he faced in relief of Ian Shane, who started the game and made seven saves.

Along with Martino, Jordan Power and Anthony Callin each registered a goal and an assist in the victory for the Golden Knights.

Ethan Haider stopped 21 of 22 shots in goal for Clarkson (5-6-0, 3-1-0 ECAC).

The Golden Knights scored two of its three unanswered goals in the opening four minutes of the contest as Martino scored just 71 seconds into the game. Power added a power-play goal just before the four-minute mark to give Clarkson an early two-goal lead.

Callin recorded the Golden Knights' second goal with the man-advantage on the night over halfway through the second period.

Tupker cut Clarkson's deficit to 3-1 when his wrist shot from the left point evaded traffic in front of the net and found the back of the net.

Martino added an insurance marker with his second marker of the night – an empty-net goal – with 16 seconds left.

Game Notes

• Saturday was the 146th all-time meeting between Cornell and Clarkson, a series the Big Red still controls following the setback, 70-57-19.

• It was the first time Cornell lost at Cheel Arena since falling to Clarkson, 2-1, on Jan. 29, 2016. Cornell entered the contest on a five-game unbeaten streak at Clarkson's home arena (1-0-4).

• Cornell also saw its 11-game unbeaten streak (7-0-4) in the North Country come to end Saturday. It was the Big Red's first loss in St. Lawrence County since losing to St. Lawrence in overtime on Jan. 30, 2016.

• Tupker's third-period goal snapped his 31-game goalless streak, registering his first tally in nearly a calendar year (Nov. 13, 2021 vs. RPI).

Looking Ahead

Cornell opens a three-game homestand at Lynah Rink next weekend when the Big Red hosts a pair of Ivy League opponents in Yale and Brown. Both games are slated for 7 p.m. puck drops. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN+ and fans can also tune in to Jason Weinstein's call on WHCU (870 AM, 97.7 FM).
