The Big Red opened with some strong offense, that included holding the lead for over five minutes of the quarter. The Big Red scoring opened with a long two from Mulroy, but the Knights answered with nearly an identical shot, a long two. Cornell began to build a lead, eventually out to 10-6 just over four minutes into the contest. The Big Red offense flowed through Mulroy, who lead Cornell with six after the first quarter. Cornell's turnovers helped FDU retake the lead, as the Big red committed seven in the first quarter alone. Fairleigh Dickinson lead after one, 16-14.
The Knights stretched their lead in the second, leading by as many as 13 at 35-22, but the Big Red closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to trail by just nine at the break.
The third quarter did not see a Big Red point until 8:17, when
Ania McNicholas hit a jumper. The Big Red found foul trouble early, tallying the fifth team foul with 6:36 remaining in the quarter. FDU capitalized on the advantage, going to the line three more times on fouls in the quarter. Foul trouble and the FDU defense helped hold the Big Red to just 12 points in the quarter, while FDU tallied 19 to increase its lead to 16, leading 56-40 after the third quarter.
The Big Red outscored the Knights 11-6 in the fourth, but the Knights had already ammased the lead, closing out 62-51.
