Men's Hoops Improves To 3-1, Tops Ithaca In Crosstown Battle

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Guy Ragland Jr. posted his second career double-double to lead four double figure scorers as Cornell improved to 3-1 on the season with an 83-61 victory over a game Ithaca College squad on Friday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red gradually pulled away against its Division III opponent, improving to 6-0 all-time against the Bombers.

Ragland had 14 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot, while Keller Boothby matched him in the scoring column with 14 points and seven rebounds. Greg Dolan chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Nazir Williams had 12 points. Sean Hansen and Isaiah Gray each had seven points and Chris Manon had five points, four rebounds and four assists in the win. Cornell hit 12 3-pointers and shot 48 percent from the floor, assisting on 21 baskets and holding the Bombers to 33 percent shooting, including just 6-of-30 from 3-point range.

Logan Wendell had a game-high 16 points with five rebounds and three assists to lead the Bombers, while Jack Stern notched 10 points and grabbed six boards. Ithaca cut an 18-point deficit to six with 14:07 left in regulation on consecutive 3-pointers by Wendell, but Max Watson hit a 3-pointer on the other end to trigger a game-clinching 12-2 run for the home team.Once built up, Ithaca never got back within 15 points the rest of the way.

First Half

• Cornell broke out of the gates early, hitting three 3-pointers en route to building a 13-4 lead five minutes in.
• The Bombers kept within striking distance, though it was a double figure lead midway through the first half after Keller Boothby's second 3-pointer of the night.
• Cornell couldn't do much to extend the advantage once it hit 15 (34-19) on an Isaiah Gray dunk with 3:15 remaining before halftime.
• It was a 38-24 Big Red lead at the break as the home team held Ithaca to 0-for-11 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc while shooting 50 percent from the field itself.
 

Second Half

• The Big Red built its lead to 45-27 three minutes into the second half after consecutive buckets by Hansen and Dolan.
• The Bombers fought back with a 16-4 run sparked by Wendell to get back to 49-43. 
• The visitors got the ball back after forcing a miss, but Wendell couldn't convert on the other end and Max Watson made them pay with his first triple of the contest.
• Seven consecutive points by Nazir Williams pushed the lead back to 14 and Ithaca never crept back within 13.
 

Next Up

• The Big Red will head into the Thanksgiving break after facing Canisius on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. at Newman Arena with eyes on stretching its 27-18 edge in the all-time series.
• Senior Greg Dolan, whose sister plays at Canisius on the women's team, posted 12 points, eight assists and six rebounds in last season's meeting, an 89-75 victory in Buffalo.
• The Big Red is 13-5 against the Golden Griffins in Ithaca with the last meeting a 67-60 triumph on Nov. 26, 2014.
