NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Cornell women's ice hockey team surrendered three first period goals and couldn't claw its way back, dropping the opener of the Smashville Women's Collegiate Showcase to Northeastern 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Ford Ice Center Bellevue. The ninth-ranked Big Red fell to 6-3 on the season, while the eighth-ranked Huskies upped its record to 16-2-1.
Kaitlyn Isaac scored her first goal of the season 6:39 into the second period to cut into Northeastern's 3-0 lead, but two third period goals put the game on ice for the Huskies.
Alina Mueller scored twice in the opening 10 minutes and Skylar Irving netted a pair of goals for Northeastern, good for the team's fourth consecutive win.
Everything but the scoreboard looked even, as the Huskies held a narrow 26-25 shot advantage and both teams attempted just two power plays, with Northeastern capitalizing on one in the third.
Deanna Fraser made 21 saves while playing all 60 minutes between the pipes for the Big Red, but was outdueled by Gwyneth Phillips with 24 stops in improving to 16-2-1.
Cornell will bounce right back when it meets Ivy League and ECAC Hockey rival Princeton in the second contest of the Showcase. The Big Red and the 14th-ranked Tigers will meet on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 12 p.m. CT.
