ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior forward
Gillis Frechette scored twice within the Cornell women's hockey team's three-goal outburst during the first period on Tuesday, setting the stage for a 4-0 victory over St. Lawrence in ECAC Hockey game at Lynah Rink.
Frechette also added assists on the final two goals, posting the first four-point effort of the season for Cornell (9-9-2, 7-6-2). Junior linemate
Izzy Daniel wasn't far behind with a goal and and two assists.
Frechette started the scoring at the 10:01 mark of the opening frame after junior forward
Izzy Daniel knifed down a clearing pass from a St. Lawrence defender out of midair. That knocked the puck into the path of Frechette just inside the blue line, allowing the Big Red's leading scorer to skate unabated toward the top of the slot before wiring a shot high to the stick side.
Just 1:40 later, Frechette struck again after a shot from sophomore defenseman
Ashley Messier hit Daniel near the top of the crease, deflecting to Frechette cruising down the slot for an easy conversion into the vacated wide side of the net.
The flurry of scoring concluded a little less than four minutes later on a beautiful passing play. Frechette fired a pass from the right-wing half wall to senior blueliner
Athena Song, who then advanced toward the top of the circle before threading a pass around a would-be shot-blocker to junior forward
Kaitlin Jockims for a redirection into the net from close range.
Cornell (9-9-2, 7-6-2 ECAC Hockey) would go on to spar with St. Lawrence (11-10-5, 7-5-2) for the better part of the final two periods, but it didn't surrender more than the odd quality scoring chance. Part of that equation was also not sending the Saints to a single power play after the first period.
Daniel then capped the scoring with an empty-netter, set up by sophomore forward
Lily Delianedis — who was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for January earlier in the day.
Anchoring the effort was graduate student
Lindsay Browning, who made 20 saves for her ECAC Hockey-leading sixth shutout of the season. It was also the 18th shutout of her collegiate career, which matches Lauren Slebodnick '13 for second-most on the program's all-time record list.
The victory — coupled with Princeton's need for an overtime period to defeat Rensselaer — helps Cornell climb into sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings. At 24 points, the Big Red is one point behind St. Lawrence (which has played one fewer game) and one ahead of Princeton.
Cornell continues its six-game home stand this weekend with a pair of 2 p.m. starts against league-leading Harvard on Saturday and Colgate on Sunday.
