ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman
Lan Mi and senior
Valerie Ho won their respective singles matches in straight sets, but Yale outlasted the Cornell women's tennis team for a 4-2 win in the consolation semifinals of the ECAC Indoor Championships on Saturday morning at Reis Tennis Center.
Ho and Mi teamed up to cruise to a 6-1 win at #3 doubles to start the day for Cornell (0-4) – the tournament's eighth seed – but fourth-seeded Yale (3-3) won the other two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Ho (#5) and Mi (#1) then made quick work of their singles matches to bring the Big Red to a 2-1 lead. Meanwhile,
Alexandra Savu won the first set of her match at #6 and the other three opening sets went to tiebreakers.
Lauren Stein was able to win hers at #4, and the Big Red had a path to victory if it could repeat its success in the second sets.
The Bulldogs battled back. The only other two-setter went to the visitors at #3, and
Katherine Nguyen reversed her fortunes in a second tiebreaker to force a third set at #2. But Yale went on to win the third set of the other two remaining matches to clinch the match.
The Big Red will wrap up tournament play at 8 a.m. Sunday against the loser of Saturday's match between sixth-seeded Brown and seventh-seeded Dartmouth.
