HAMILTON, N.Y. – In a game dominated by special teams, sophomore forward
Kaitlin Jockims scored a power-play goal for the Cornell women's hockey team, but nationally-ranked Colgate scored twice on its own power plays to ride out a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night at Class of 1965 Arena.
Kalty Kaltounkova scored twice on the power play to fuel Colgate (24-7-1, 14-5-1 ECAC Hockey), which entered the week ranked eighth in both the DCU/USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, and help the host Raiders split the season series with the Big Red after the latter's victory on Feb. 6 at Lynah Rink.
While the Raiders scored twice on the power play, Cornell (12-12-2, 10-8-2) technically struck once on a five-on-four — though freshman forward
Leah MacSween's first collegiate goal came just two seconds after the Big Red's first power play of the evening. Junior forward
Gillis Frechette poked a the puck loose to set up MacSween's shot from the left circle, which beat Raiders goaltender Hannah Murphy to the glove side to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Kaltounkova's first goal tied the game a little less than three minutes later, then Danielle Serdachny's shot after a toe-drag midway through the second trickled in off the glove of Cornell goaltender
Lindsay Browning to give Colgate the lead. The Big Red hung tough with the Raiders through the middle frame, but ultimately conceded a pivotal third Colgate goal with 36 seconds left in the frame by Kaltounkova to give Colgate its first two-goal lead of the night.
Cornell responded by outshooting Colgate, 13-2, in the third period. Jockims' seventh goal of the season — and the fourth in her last four games — cut the Big Red's deficit to one with 15:22 to play. Frechette earned her second assist of the night on the play, helping to set up a shot from junior forward
Izzy Daniel near the point that first deflected off a Colgate defender before angling into the net off Jockims' left skate.
With the loss, the Big Red is eliminated from contention for home ice in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Hockey Championships — though it will continue to try to improve its current seventh-place standing in the tables with a weekend series on the road at 6 p.m. Friday against St. Lawrence and 3 p.m. Saturday versus Clarkson.
