ITHACA, N.Y. — Boasting a 12-0 record from the #1 position through the regular season, senior
Sivasangari Subramaniam has become the Cornell women's squash program's first Ivy League Player of the Year, as announced by the league on Wednesday morning.
In addition to being unanimously selected as the top competitor in the league, Subramanian earned the requisite spot on the All-Ivy League team to become just the fifth member of the women's squash team to earn such an honor on multiple occasions. Sophomore
Wen Li Lai earned the same honor, giving the Big Red multiple selections on the All-Ivy squad for the first time sine 2014.
In her first collegiate matches since finishing as the runner-up in the 2020 CSA Individual Championships, Subramaniam – ranked 26th in the world by the Professional Squash Association – has needed just the minimum three games in 10 of her 12 victories. She prevailed in close fifth games in the other two against Columbia's Sin Yuk Chan and Harvard's Hana Moataz.
Lai, ranked 104th in the world, enjoyed a fair amount of success in her first collegiate season with a 8-4 mark from the #2 position in Cornell's lineup. She was 4-2 in Ivy League matches, with victories over opponents from Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton and Penn.
The Big Red sits idle this weekend while the men's College Squash Association National Championships take place, but then it will be the women's turn Feb. 25-27. Cornell is ranked ninth nationally by the CSA, and as such will be the top seed in the 'B' Division Championships, the Kurtz Cup.
