Lindsay Browning made 43 saves for the Cornell women's hockey team, but Dara Grieg scored with nine seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Colgate to a 1-0 victory in Game 1 of an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinals series at Class of 1965 Arena.
The teams' third meeting in the last three weeks featured far fewer goals than the first two. At the heart of that fact was perfect penalty killing from both teams, with Cornell (14-13-2) going a perfect 7-for-7 against a 5-for-5 effort from Colgate (27-7-1) — which entered the weekend ranked eighth in both national polls.
The winner came after the puck got worked up the left half wall and forced toward the net. Browning sprawled to her left, but the puck bounced around near the goal mouth before squirting out to the far side for Greig to slam in.
The best-of-three series continues with Game 2 at 3 p.m. Saturday. If Cornell can force a third and deciding game, it would be contested at 3 p.m. Sunday.
