LEESBURG, Fla. -- Freshman
Maxine McCraw picked up her first collegiate win by holding Siena to five hits and scattering two runs in her debut, helping Cornell salvage a doubleheader split with a 5-2 win in game two on Saturday afternoon at the Spring Games. The Big Red picked up its first win of the season after falling in the opener, 4-1.
Maicie Levitt's two-run triple in the second was part of a four-run inning, rallying past the Saints who scored first and holding Siena at bay afterwards.
Olivia Rooney was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Big Red.
McCraw gave way to
Mia Burd, who picked up the save with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. She allowed four hits and struck out one.
That came on the heels of game one, a hard-luck loss to
Gabrielle Maday. The junior didn't allow an earned run and struck out five, but was snake-bitten with six Big Red errors.
Levitt had two of Cornell's seven hits, and
Celia Macari drove in the long run in the sixth inning to get the Big Red back within 3-1.
Ava Fitzmaurice picked up the victory in the opener with a complete game seven-hitter, striking out five.
Cornell will close out opening weekend with contests against Iowa (9 a.m.) and Rutgers (11:30 a.m.) on Sunday, Feb. 27.
