EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Cornell fencing team posted a 5-0 record on the final day of the Northwestern Duals, ending the weekend with 13 wins without a loss and breaking a school record that stood for more than half a century in the process. The fourth-ranked Big Red will enter the Ivy League championships sporting a perfect 32-0 record, one of two teams nationally without a loss this year (Princeton, 19-0).
The Big Red opened Sunday's competition against the host Wildcats, defeating the eighth-ranked team 18-9. Less than an hour later it knocked off 14th-ranked North Carolina for the second time this season, this time by an 18-9 margin to improve to 29-0. Cornell then easily walked past Cleveland State, 25-2, for its 30th consecutive win this season. That victory, and the two it would add later in the day, surpassed the 1970 unbeaten, untied NCAA championship men's ice hockey team that finished 29-0-0 for the most consecutive wins to begin a season by a Big Red varsity team.
Cornell closed the weekend with wins over ninth-ranked Temple (19-8) and Air Force (24-3). The win over the Owls improved the Big Red to six top 15 team victories on the weekend.
The 5-0 day made the Big Red the only unbeaten team at the Northwestern Duals and propels them into next weekend's Ivy League championship at Brown as a threat to claim its first-ever title. To do so, Cornell would have to hold off five other teams in the top 11 nationally - including No. 1 Princeton and No. 2 Columbia, as well as No. 5 Harvard, No. 10 Yale and No. 11 Penn.
