HARRISONBURG, Va. –
Lan Mi and
Valerie Ho won their respective singles matches on Sunday, but James Madison won the final two matches to reach completion to secure a 5-2 victory over the Cornell women's tennis team at East Campus Tennis Courts. The Big Red fell to 0-2 in dual matches.
James Madison (2-3) won the doubles point to start the day before the first three singles matches commenced. Two of those were over quickly, including Mi's 6-1, 6-2 victory from the #1 position, to leave the hosts ahead, 2-1. The third featured
Katherine Nguyen, who battled back from a first-set loss to win the second in a tiebreaker.
While Nguyen and her opponent at #3 took to a third and deciding set, Ho rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 decision at #4 to tie match score at 2. Even after the Dukes won at #5 to pull back ahead and onto the brink of victory, Cornell had hope with
Jenny Wong up a break in her first set at #6 when Nguyen went to yet another tiebreaker in the third set of her marathon match. But from there, James Madison pulled away to win both for a 5-2 final.
Up next for Cornell is the ECAC Indoor Championships, which it will host Friday through Sunday at Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
