Penn State Hands Women's Hockey 5-0 Loss

ITHACA, N.Y. – The last time the Cornell and Penn State women's hockey teams clashes four weeks ago in Happy Valley, the normally staunch Nittany Lions were gouged for several goals on counter-attack rushes and took a five-goal loss on their home ice. On Tuesday night at Lynah Rink, they returned that favor to the Big Red.

Penn State struck for three goals in the first period and rode out a 5-0 victory, surrendering just 16 shots on goal to Cornell.

While Cornell (10-11-2) outshot Penn State (14-9-4) in the first period, it still found itself with a three-goal deficit entering the second period.

Mya Vaslet opened the scoring with a sharp-angle shot from the bottom of the left circle that found its way through starting goaltender Deanna Fraser at the 8:10 mark. Kiara Zanon converted a back-door feed from Lyndie Lobdell on the power play to double the lead, then she snapped a shot over Fraser's glove after a neutral-zone turnover to make the score 3-0 with 52.3 seconds left in the frame.

The lead reached four around midway through the second period when a hard ring around the boards kicked out into the slot for Alyssa Machado to slam into the vacated net. Rachel Weiss capped the scoring with an elevated backhand after beating a defender wide in the third period.

Sophomore Deanna Fraser started in goal for the Big Red, making five saves over the first period. Freshman Brynn DuLac took over from there, stopping 19 of 21 shots over the final 40 minutes.

Cornell returns to ECAC Hockey play for the rest of its regular season, starting with a key home series against Rensselaer at 6 p.m. Friday and Union at 3 p.m. Saturday.
