ITHACA, N.Y. -- After a weekend of outside work, the Cornell softball team resumes competition at the Mount Softball Tournament. The Big Red will play single games against Mount St. Mary's and Morgan State on both Friday and Sunday, March 12 and 13 at Our Lady of the Meadows Field in Emmitsburg, Md. Friday's contests, originally slated for Saturday, will have first pitch at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m, while Sunday games will be played at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Cornell has had a chance to get outside in nicer weather since its season-opening 1-4 start at the Spring Games. The Big Red split with Siena, including a 5-2 victory, and put up a strong fight in losses for Florida Gulf Coast, Iowa and Rutgers. THe Big Red was ahead of the pitching in its first weekend out, posting a 3.73 ERA and limiting its opponents to a .288 batting average.
The offense was led by
Emily McKinney's .308 batting average, while both
Maicie Levitt and
Olivia Rooney had three hits over the weekend.
Lilly Travieso, Celian Macari, Marisa Zorrila and
Emma Antich each celebrated their first career hits during the trip.
Morgan State is 4-7 and has won three of its last four heading into the weekend. Tayven Rousseau leads three Bears batting at least .300 with a .367 average. All three of Morgan State's primary pitchers sport an ERA below 2.60, with Anaya Hunte posting a team-best three victories and a 2.38 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. Mount St. Mary's has a 5-9 overall record and has won three straight entering the weekend. Vanessa Martin leads the team with a .308 batting average, while Bridgette Gilliano is hitting .250 with three doubles and nine RBI. Amanda Berkley is 2-3 with a 3.58 ERA in a team-high 29.1 innings of work in the circle for head coach Anna Nagro.
