DETROIT, Mich. -- Junior
Yianni Diakomihalis will wrestle for his third national title on Saturday night and two teammates will be on the podium as All-Americans after day two of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championship at Little Caesars Arena. The Big Red stand eighth in the team race with 45.0 points.
Diakomihalis won with a commanding 6-3 victory in the semifinals against No. 4 Sammy Sasso of Ohio State, his 74th consecutive win overall to lift his all=time record in NCAA Tournament matches to 14-0. Awaiting him in the finals will be No. 10 Ridge Lovett of Nebraska. The two met earlier this year in the semifinals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and Diakomihalis escaped in overtime with a 6-4 triumph. Against Sasso, Diakomihalis had the only two takedowns and added an escape and a riding time point, with Sasso staying in it with two escapes and a stalling point. A win on Saturday would make him just the second three-time champion in Cornell history (Kyle Dake with four titles) and the 54th Division I wrestler in history to accomplish three national titles.
Sophomore
Vito Arujau dropped his semifinal match to EIWA rival Patrick Glory of Princeton by an 11-3 major decision, though the score was deceiving as he surrendered points late in desperation mode. Despite the loss, the two-time All-American can wrestle back to as high as third and will finish no lower than sixth on Saturday morning.
EIWA champion
Jonathan Loew will wrestle for seventh after being rewarded for a relentless effort against No. 9 Zach Braunagel of Illinois, finishing off a shot in sudden victory overtime to capture a 3-1 win. He also topped Rutgers All-American John Poznanski (9-4) on the day and will meet No. 8 seed Marcus Coleman of Iowa State for their final spot on the podium. He becomes the 48th Big Red wrestler to earn All-America honors for a total of 93 times.
Two other Big Red wrestlers dropped their blood round matches despite sensational efforts, falling to higher seeded wrestlers by a single point. At 165 pounds,
Julian Ramirez lost on a last-second takedown by Ohio State's Carson Karchla, 4-3.
Lewis Fernandes fell just shy of becoming the first Big Red heavyweight to earn All-America honors in program history with a 4-2 overtime defeat at the hands of Nebraska's Christian Lance.
DETROIT, Mich. -- Junior
Yianni Diakomihalis and sophomore
Vito Arujau advanced to the semifinals and claimed All-America honors on Friday afternoon on day two of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championship at Little Caesars Arena, but Cornell wrestling wants more. Entering Friday night's session in sixth place in the team race, it will have
Julian Ramirez (165),
Jonathan Loew (184) and
Lewis Fernandes (285) wrestling for the podium to add to the program's All-America total.
With 34.5 points, Cornell is just three out of fourth (Iowa, 37.5) and 2.5 behind fifth-place NC State (37.0). Friday's evening session will go a long ways toward cementing another top 10 team finish for the Big Red, its 13th consecutive top 10 team finish at tournaments it has participated in.
Arujau controlled his quarterfinal match against Northwestern's Michael DeAugustino en route to a 6-0 shutout. Arujau finished midway through the first period, drew a stall warning and entered the second period with a 2-0 lead and more than 90 seconds of riding time. After earning an escape point in the second, he added another takedown and the riding time point to close it out, 6-0. He'll meet EIWA and Ivy rival Patrick Glory of Princeton for a right to head to the finals and it will serve as the rubber match - the two have met twice this season (tied 1-1) and four times in their career (tied 2-2), last meeting in the EIWA finals when Arujau dominated in a 19-6 major decision.
Diakomihalis took the only shots in a scoreless first and chose down to start the second. He escaped within seven seconds and immediately went back on attack, with Iowa's eighth-seeded Matt Murin playing for the stalemate. Diakomihalis finally finished a shot 30 seconds into the second to go up 3-0. Murin escaped and chose down in the third, but was hit for stalling and the penalty point made it 4-2 after his escape. A third period Diakomihalis takedown made it 6-2, with the Hawkeyes' escape providing the final point to capture the 6-3 victory. Standing in the way of his third trip to the finals is fourth-seeded Sammy Sasso of Ohio State, who Diakomihalis toppled 7-2 earlier this season in the finals of the Las Vegas Invitational.
Ramirez went 2-0 in the morning, avenging his two EIWA tournament losses at 165 pounds. After dispatching of No. 14 Joshua Ogunsanya of Columbia, 14-3, he stuck No. 12
Zach Hartman of Bucknell late in the first for the fall to advance to the round of 12. Standing in the way of earning All-America honors is No. 7 Carson Kharchla of Ohio State who owns a pair of wins over Ramirez this season when they met in Las Vegas (15-7 and 5-2).
Loew advanced to the round of 12 with triumphs over No. 12 Brit Wilson of Northern Illinois (11-4) and No. 20 John Poznanski of Rutgers (9-4). The win over Poznanski, a 2021 All-American, sets up a matchup with No. 9 Zach Braunagel of Illinois for a spot on the podium.
Fernandes had just as challenging a road, ending the road for three-time All-American Trent Hilger of Wisconsin (2-1) and topping former All-American Nathan Traxler of Virginia Tech 10-4. The difference in the first match was a second period reversal, while the second was a takedown and four back points that proved to be the difference.
Tournament runs for
Hunter Richard (157),
Chris Foca (174) and
Jacob Cardenas (197) all came to an end on Friday, including capping off Richard's senior campaign after a fantastic run.
Richard won three consecutive matches in the back draw as the No. 30 seed, including two over higher seeded opponents. He knocked off No. 13 Justin Thomas of Oklahoma and gave defending 149-pound national champion Austin O'Connor of North Carolina all he could handle before surrendering late points in desperation mode in an 8-1 loss. He finished one win from the final 12.
Both Foca and Cardenas dropped matches to higher ranked opponents, with Cardenas falling 8-6 in sudden victory to fourth-seeded Patrick Brucki of Michigan, formerly of Princeton. Foca lost an 8-2 decision to Duke's No. 13 Matt Finesilver in the consolation second round.
