TAMPA, Fla. -- No. 49 VCU squeaked out a win in the doubles point and claimed three competitive singles matches to close out No. 50 Cornell early, topping the Big Red 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The Rams improved to 11-6, while the Big Red fell to 12-4.
CU earned straight set victories at 2, 4 and 6, though the Big Red had secured wins in the first set at 1, 3 and 5 in unfinished matches.
Alafia Ayeni and Charles Bertimon were headed to the third set tied 1-1, while
Radu Papoe was racing toward victory at No. 3, up 4-0 in the second after winning the first set. Pietro Dimondini needed a comeback at No. 5, trailing 5-0 in the third in a 1-1 match at No. 5.
The Rams claimed wins at 1 and 3 to clinch the doubles point, as 38th-ranked Bertimon and Maxence Bobichon topped Ayeni and
Vladislav Melnic 6-2 in the top spot.
