Women's Tennis Opens Ivy Season with 4-3 Win At #43 Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- For the second time in two weeks, the Cornell women's tennis knocked off a ranked opponent. This time, it was against an Ivy League opponent, and the victory came away from the friendly confines of the Reis Tennis Center.

The Big Red edged out No. 43 Columbia by a 4-3 margin  on Saturday afternoon at LifeTime Westchester. Cornell improved t o 4-8 (1-0 Ivy) with the victory, while the Lions slipped to 10-6 (0-1 Ivy) in the conference opener for both teams.

Cornell earned narrow wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles to shift the match in its favor. Jenny Wong and Lauren Stein's 7-6(4) win over Akanksha Bhan and Melissa Sakar sealed the doubles point, while Katherine Nguyen held off Anna Zhang 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 in the second slot of the lineup to guarantee the victory. Lan Mi also battled to top Bhan in the top slot of the order, 7-5, 7-5 in one of the feature matches of the day.

Cornell knocked off No. 72 Buffalo on March 11 by a 6-1 margin at Reis Tennis Center. 

The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 when it hosts Binghamton for a 6 p.m. dual match.
