ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior defenseman
Sam Malinski's selection to the first team highlight's the Cornell men's hockey team's four players to receive All-Ivy League honors, as announced by the league on Wednesday morning. Senior forward
Kyle Betts has been named to the second team, and both junior forward Matt Sitenburg and freshman goaltender
Ian Shane have garnered honorable mention.
Only Ivy League statistics are considered for the All-Ivy squads, creating a unique wrinkle for the teams that play in a league within another league (ECAC Hockey). Cornell finished in a tie for second in the subset this season and is now 30-6-6 in its last 42 Ivy League games.
Malinski has been placed on the first team for the first time after earning honorable mention after his only other collegiate season in 2020. He has eight points across the Big Red's 10 Ivy League games, including seven assists and a goal in the Big Red's Nov. 5 contest at Harvard. The average of 0.70 assists per game ranked second among defensemen in Ancient Eight play. Beyond the offense, Malinski is also among the Big Red's leaders in ice time for the season, seeing time on power plays, penalty kills and at even strength.
Betts is collecting All-Ivy honors for the first time, having found the scoresheet in seven of the Big Red's 10 Ivy contests. His eight assists over those games was tied for most in the league, including two during a February stretch that yielded him ECAC Hockey Player of the Month honors.
Stienburg collects All-Ivy honorable mention for the first time after posting eight points on four goals and four assists in nine Ivy games. He scored twice in the Nov. 19 game against Brown, including the winner on a power play in overtime. Shane also earned honorable mention after emerging in the second half of the season as one of the league's best goaltenders. He posted a 2-2-2 record over six games, collecting a shutout and posting a 1.64 goals against average that was second-lowest in the league.
