ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's lacrosse team got a career-high five goals from
Genevieve DeWinter, but Yale controlled the middle two quarters and claimed a 15-9 victory over the Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Bulldogs improved to 9-2 (5-0 Ivy), while Cornell slipped to 7-6 (3-2 Ivy) with the loss.
DeWinter's five goals, all coming in the first half and four coming in the first quarter, highlighted a Big Red offense that was held to single digit goals for just the third time this season.
Annie Thomas was credited with three draw controls to set a Cornell single season record with 69, surpassing the 68 by Sarah Hefner in 2014.
Josie Vogel had a goal and an assist, with
Katie McGahan making nine saves for the defense.
Cornell held 5-4 at the end of a back-and-fourth first quarter that saw DeWinter net four of the first five goals of the contest. The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run and the home team never recovered, getting within 9-7 early in the second half before a 6-1 Yale run put the game away.
Taylor Lane had three goals and an assist to lead Yale, while adding nine draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls, with Fallon Vaughn netting four. Olivia Penoyer had a goal and four assists, Taylor Everson registered a hat trick and Olivia Markert was credited with two goals and two assists. Cami Donadio played the final 45 minutes in goal as the Bulldogs rebounded from its first quarter deficit to make six saves between the pipes.
