ITHACA, N.Y. -- Pitching ruled the day as the Cornell softball team split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Brown at Hoy Field. The visiting Bears (15-25, 6-14 Ivy) won game one 3-0, with the Big Red (15-18, 5-9 Ivy) answering with a 4-1 victory in game two.
Game One
Lauren Innerst picked up a three-hit shutout for Brown in game one, striking out six to pick up her sixth victory of the year. She also drove in an insurance run in the 3-0 victory.
Innerst survived six walks and a competitive outing by
Mia Burd. The Big Red junior scattered seven hits and three runs over 6.1 innings of work.
Brianna Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI with a fourth inning single that scored what proved to be the winning runs. Nicole Kim had two hits in the victory for the Bears.
The Big Red threatened by loading the bases in the second with one out, but Innerst got out of the jam with a strikeout and a pop out. She also got out of a first and second jam with no one out in the seventh thanks to a double play.
Game Two
Gabrielle Maday won her fourth game of the season with a complete game effort that included six hits and no walks surrendered coupled with four strikeouts. A three-run fifth inning was the difference for Cornell, with a leadoff homer by
Emma Antich setting the table.
Tied 1-1, Antich drove the first pitch she saw in the fifth over the left-centerfield fence. An
Allison Kerce triple two batters later made it 3-1, and two batters after that
Olivia Rooney's flyout to right made it 4-1.
Brown threatened briefly in the seventh, putting two runners on and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Maday shut the door for the victory.
Kerce was 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Big Red.
The Big Red will celebrate its seniors prior to Sunday's 12:30 p.m. single game at Niemand*Robison Field.
