ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team swept its midweek doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore, topping the Hawks 6-1 in game one before rallying for a 10-6 win in eight innings in the nightcap on Tuesday afternoon at Hawk Field. The Big Red improved to 8-13, while UMES slipped to 12-21.
Game One
Emily McKinney went 4-for-4 with a double and
Lilly Travieso doubled as part of a 2-for-4 day with a pair of RBI in the opening win, which was delayed an hour at the start due to rain. Cornell had 11 total base hits, including a 2-for-4 day by
Avery Wagner that included two runs scored.
Maxine McCraw went the distance in the circle, scattering seven hits and allowing just one run while striking out three to pick up her third win of the year.
The Big Red scored a single run in the first, taking advantage of consecutive hits by
Avery Wagner and
Emily McKinney to score on a groundout by
Emma Antich.
The top of the order got the Big Red started again in the third with consecutive singles by
Maicie Levitt and Wagner, with a run-scoring double by McKinney making it 2-0. Crist walked for the second time in the game, this time with the bases loaded, to make it 3-0. With the bases still packed with no one out,
Olivia Rooney drobe in the fourth run with a sac fly.
UMES got a run back in the fourth, but McCraw got out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the inning with only one run scoring. The Big Red got that run back and more when Travieso doubled in two runs in the fifth for a little extra insurance to go up 6-1.
Game Two
The Big Red came back from a 5-0 deficit to force extra innings, then plated four in the eighth to cap off a 10-6 victory over the Hawks in game two.
Cornell struck for three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to knot the game, then scored the go-ahead run in the eighth when
Maicie Levitt singled in a run.
Emily McKinney continued her hot streak with an RBI walk and
Emma Antich put the capper on with a two run single.
That allowed
Mia Burd a chance to shut the door, going the distance to win her fourth game of the year, striking out five without issuing a walk. The home team scored five runs in the fourth to put itself in the driver's seat, but like it has all season, Cornell had plenty of fight left in it.
McKinney was 3-for-4 with four RBI to pace a Big Red offense that collected 12 hits. Levitt and
Marisa Zorrilla each had two hits, with Levitt scoring three times.
The Big Red will play at Delaware State on Wednesday, April 6 at 4 p.m.
