Baseball Readies for Three-Game Set at Princeton This Weekend

4/7/2022 3:00:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell baseball will continue its eight-game road swing with a three-game Ivy League series at Princeton's Clarke Field this weekend. The series is set to open with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude with a Sunday matinee, with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.

The Big Red is rolling as it heads into this weekend's series, having won three of their last four games, all of which came in dramatic fashion.

This past weekend, Cornell took two out of three against Ivy League opponent Yale, sweeping the Saturday doubleheader of that series. In the opener against Yale, sophomore Matt Barnhorst's ninth inning sacrifice fly gave the Big Red a 2-1 walk-off victory. In the second game, Cornell erased a 9-2 deficit with an offensive surge powered by consecutive two-run doubles from Ryan Ross and Max Jensen and the go-ahead, three-run pinch-hit home run by Nathan Waugh win 12-9. Cornell lost the series finale against Yale 18-5, but bounced back on a short turnaround, winning their midweek matchup with Canisius 11-10 on Tuesday. Cornell found themselves down 10-3 in the third inning against Canisius, but capitalized on strong performances out of the bullpen and a resilient attack at the plate to win the game 11-10. Chris Ellison, William Gilbert, and Braden Mack combined for 6.0 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball out of the bullpen for the Big Red, with Ellison delivering 4.1 innings and five strike outs, Gilbert earning the win, and Mack collecting the save. While the bullpen silenced the Golden Griffins' bats, Sam Kaplan's RBI double in the fourth and two-run homer in the sixth, Matt Barnhorst's two-run double in the eighth, and Joe Hollerbach's two-run single in the eighth powered Cornell's comeback offensively, tying the game at 10-10 after eight. Cornell took an 11-10 lead on a bases-loaded walk from Jason Apostle in the final frame and hung on to win in the bottom half of the inning.

Nathan Waugh has been on fire at the plate of late, stringing together a three-game hitting streak and securing seven base hits in his last nine at bats. Joe Hollerbach continues hist strong offensive season, leading the Big Red in hits (25), home runs (three), and RBIs (13) while hitting for a .338 average. On the bump, Ryan porter has been impressive, appearing in three Ivy League contests in relief and accumulating a 2.45 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in Ivy League play.

Cornell is catching Princeton at the right time, as the Tigers are on an eight-game skid. This past weekend, Princeton was swept by Columbia in a three-game set. Princeton nearly snapped its losing streak in the first game of the series against Columbia, but fell short in extra innings 7-6. In the remaining two games of that series, the Lions dominated the Tigers 16-1 and 15-2. Princeton's woes continued on Wednesday, as the Tigers dropped a midweek matchup with Seton Hall, 14-3. Princeton holds a 2-20 overall record and is winless in Ivy League play heading into this weekend's series with Cornell.

This weekend's series will be the first meeting between Cornell and Princeton since the 2019 season and the first time Princeton will host Cornell at Clarke Field since 2018.
