ITHACA, N.Y. -- A century of baseball on Hoy Field concluded on a picture-perfect, windswept Sunday afternoon of baseball. Columbia ended up on right side of the scoreboard, but the Cornell baseball team was able to take in every moment despite an 11-5 loss.
Cornell celebrated its seniors following Sunday's contest, saying goodbye to both them and the field they spent their entire careers on.
Sam Kaplan was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead the Big Red offense.
Nathan Waugh was 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored with
Matt Barnhorst posting a 2-for-4 days for Cornell.
Columbia scored four runs in both the first and second innings to take an 8-0 lead and never looked back, collecting 14 hits with three apiece from Andy Blake and Joshua Solomon. Blake was 3-for-5 with a triple, a walk, three runs scored and three RBI, while Solomon was a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks. Hayden Schott was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI while scoring twice. Sean Higgins picked up the win, scattering six hits and three runs over 4.0 innings, while Griffin Palfrey allowed just two hits and zero runs over 3.0 innings of relief.
Schott's first inning grand slam put the Lions ahead for good, driving the first pitch he saw over the right-centerfield fence to stake the visitors to the early lead. Cornell chipped away with RBI singles by Wills Guy in the second and Waugh and Kaplan in the third frame. Cornell's final runs came on a two-run homer by Kaplan in the eighth, but that was as close as the Big Red would get.
